Macy’s to open 1st small format store in New Jersey as it accelerates expansion

NEW YORK – The first pared-down Macy’s in New Jersey will open its doors in a few days, part of the company’s push to triple the number of such units by fall 2025.

The latest small-format Macy’s store is slated to hold its grand opening April 19 at Centerton Square in Mount Laurel, N.J. The 30,200-sq.-ft. store will open in a space formerly occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond. Neighboring retailers include Target, T.J. Maxx, Burlington, Five Below, Mattress Firm, Lane Bryant, DSW and Yankee Candle.

The company is also expected to open a 2nd small-format Macy’s store in New Jersey at some point this year in Ramsey, N.J. Also a former Bed Bath & Beyond location, the unit will be approximately 25,000 sq. ft.

Last October, Macy’s Inc. announced plans to step up expansion of its small-store strategy, beginning in 2024. By the second half of 2025, it expects to operate up to 30 new small-format Macy’s units. There were a dozen such units in operation at the end of 2023.

“Paired with a premier digital experience, these small-format stores enhance the company’s store portfolio with a mix of the best on- and off-mall locations, to deliver a seamless shopping experience across channels,” the company said in the announcement.

Macy’s Inc. has not yet published the full roster of small-format locations it has planned. Nor has it publicly release a list of the roughly 150 full-line Macy’s stores slated to close between 2024 and 2026.
